What’s new
Release notes for PencilCAD, newest first.
New toolbars
Each toolset has a new toolbar, and one way to switch between them.
One toolset chip
- The toolset chip sits at the left of the page pill, at the bottom centre of the screen, in Sketch, CAD and Cut. Tap it and pick. Settings → Tools still switches too.
- More no longer holds the toolset switch. It keeps Change paper, Import…, Underlay…, Share, Tear out, Appearance and Settings, and in CAD and Cut also Select All and Markup.
CAD
- A 13-button rail down the left: Select; Line, Rectangle, Circle, Arc, Spline and More shapes; Dimension; Trim, Fillet, Offset and Transform; and Line type.
- Trim folds in Extend and Break, Fillet folds in Chamfer, and Transform holds move, rotate, scale, mirror and patterns.
- A constraint column beside the rail shows only the constraints that fit what you picked. At rest it shows the gear, All constraints and AutoConstrain.
- At the top right: Snap, the units chip for units, page scale and line and shape weights, Layers and More. Undo and Redo are bottom left.
Cut
- Shapes (rectangle, circle, polygon and line) sit on the rail with Select, Text, Combine, Tabs, Operations, Sheet and Layout.
- One Make button at the top right: Job, then Check and export…, or Send to….
Sketch
- The tools are regrouped: Pen, Pencil, Marker and Highlighter; Eraser and Lasso; Ruler. A weight tick sits under the active tool.
- The highlighter keeps its own weight and colour.
Scratch paper, now with 2D CAD
Version 2.0 gives the app a new name and two new toolsets. The sketching you know is all still there, and CAD and Cut are one tap away on the toolset chip.
Three toolsets
- Sketch has the pens, highlighter, eraser, lasso, ruler and drag-to-fill.
- CAD adds Select, the drawing tools, Dimension, Trim, Fillet, Offset, Transform, constraints and Layers.
- Cut takes a drawing to a cutter, laser or router.
- Pages are the same in all three, so a drawing moves between them untouched.
CAD tools
- Lines, boxes, circles, ellipses, arcs and curves that stay editable. Drag a corner and joined lines follow.
- Snaps to ends, midpoints, centres, intersections, quadrants and curves, plus tangent, perpendicular, parallel and polar.
- Trim, Extend, Fillet, Chamfer and Offset edit outlines. Select and Transform move, rotate, mirror, scale and pattern.
- Up to 10 layers a page, each one shown, hidden or locked.
- Text labels.
Dimensions that know their length
- Dimension labels each length, in mm, cm, m, inches or feet and inches.
- Radius and diameter dimensions, and a page scale that relabels every dimension at once.
- Tap a label to type a length and the line resizes to it.
Pencil-first constraints
- Write a number by a line, circle or angle and it becomes a driving dimension.
- Draw tick, arrow and corner marks for equal, parallel and square.
- Hold a scribble still to turn it into clean, constrained lines.
- AutoConstrain adds whatever a sketch is missing. Fully defined sketches turn green.
- When constraints clash, a card names the clash and offers a fix.
Import and export
- Trace a photo, a scan or a PDF page on a locked underlay, and set its scale with two taps.
- Open DXF and SVG drawings as editable shapes.
- Export PDF to scale on Letter or A4, SVG in mm or inches, and DXF with layers and colours.
Cut: from drawing to machine
- A rail, top to bottom: Select, Shapes, Text, Combine, Tabs, Operations, Sheet and Layout, and a Make button at the top right for Job, Check and export, and Send.
- Sheets for Cricut mats (12 × 12 in, 12 × 24 in, Joy 4.5 × 6.5 in and 4.5 × 12 in, Joy Xtra 8.5 × 12 in), laser bed presets to check against your machine, or Custom, with material, thickness, kerf and grain.
- Layout nests your parts on the sheet with copies and turns, and spills onto more sheets. As drawn keeps your arrangement.
- Cut, score, engrave, draw or skip, per layer or per shape, each in its own exact colour.
- Text in system fonts, your own fonts or Relief SingleLine, a single-line font for pens, scoring and engraving. Outline turns text into shapes.
- Weld and other combines keep the originals as construction, and tabs hold parts in the sheet.
- Make → Check and export… catches live text, parts off the sheet, open outlines, double cuts, overlaps, features too small to cut, size limits, empty or hidden layers, bend problems and router depth. Most issues have a one-tap fix.
- A kerf test card: cut a comb, read the fit and save the kerf.
- Export for has a profile for LightBurn, Glowforge, Cricut Design Space, a laser’s print driver, Shaper Origin, and generic SVG or DXF R2000. Files follow the Cut layout.
- Send uploads G-code over Wi-Fi to FluidNC, grblHAL, ESP3D and Onefinity/Buildbotics controllers. It never starts the machine: you load, zero and press start.
- Or Send hands the file to Cricut Design Space, Silhouette Go, xTool, Glowforge, LightBurn, Shaper Origin, Carbide Create, Easel, Mach4, SendCutSend, OSH Cut or Ponoko through Files, AirDrop or iCloud Drive. For an Epilog, it makes a hairline SVG and opens the laser’s own page in Safari.
- Router jobs: profile, pocket, engrave, V-carve and adaptive clearing with flat, single-flute, V and ball bits, capped feeds, a preview with a scrubber, and one G-code file per tool.
- Laser jobs: power, speed, passes, air and hatch for each layer, and a power × speed test grid.
- Sheet metal: bends with angle, direction, radius and K-factor, flanges from an edge, bend checks, shop rules for SendCutSend, OSH Cut or Generic, and a flat DXF with the bend lines on a BEND layer.
Guides: Cricut cut files, laser cutting, G-code for a CNC router and sheet metal flat patterns.
Everywhere else
- iCloud sync, and a PencilCAD viewer for iPhone.
- Pages twice the size of the screen, with zoom from the whole page to 8×.
- Pencil hover previews, squeeze and barrel roll on Apple Pencil Pro, and keyboard shortcuts.
- A new icon.
